I’m Tara Abdullah, a Kurdish multidisciplinary artist from Sulaimaniah, currently based in Oslo through an artistic residency with Safemuse. Working across painting, installation, performance, and sound, I draw on personal experience and my Kurdish heritage to explore identity, resist violence against women, and raise awareness of environmental issues. My practice is deeply personal, shaped by my experiences, Kurdish heritage, and a commitment to making marginalized voices heard. Working across painting, installation, performance, sculpture, video, and design, I explore childhood, family, and suppressed identity. Through projects including In-Between, The Feminine Project, and The Sound/Voice Project, I address the realities faced by women in Kurdistan and around the world. These works explore resilience and non-violent resistance, creating space for experiences that are often overlooked or silenced. My installation In-Between received a Special Prize at the Future Generation Art Prize, hosted by the Pinchuk Art Centre. My visual language combines abstraction and expressionism, drawing inspiration from Cy Twombly, the CoBrA movement, and children’s imaginative worlds. I often use recycled materials, bold colours, and layered textures, incorporating Kurdish motifs and ornaments to connect personal stories with cultural memory. Environmental conservation also informs my practice and choice of materials. Despite facing backlash for my work, I remain committed to challenging violence and inspiring change. Art is both a way of expressing my own experiences and an invitation to listen, reflect, and recognise lives too often pushed to the margins.
